Yesterday, I was honored to be asked to present the APCA Lifetime Achievement Award to my dear friend Boyd Jones. I couldn’t have been more honored if I’d won it myself, because there is no one who has ever met Boyd that wouldn’t have loved to fill my shoes.
Given an hour, I couldn’t have come up with all the words I wanted to say to convey how special Boyd is and how essential he is to our industry. But his lifetime of achievement goes so far beyond his impact on our industry. He embodies all those little internet cliches about what is really important in life. He has devoted his life to date to constantly making the world better in little ways every day thru every person lucky enough to be in his path. Here is what I had to say at my presentation, but it is not enough:
If we are lucky in our lives, and we open our hearts every day to the world around us, we might cast a hundred pebbles in the pond that ripple outward and touch the lives of others enough to change them. But my friend Boyd is a regiment of boulders, an asteroid belt dropped in the sea of storms, his ripples would make the rings of Saturn blush from inadequacy. Boyd opens his heart to every soul, his ears to every song and poem, his gut to every belly laugh, his eyes to every scrap of beauty and art, and reflects them back out in the world. There is not an artist or agent in this room who hasn’t felt his kindness, his aid and his warmth….not one that wouldn’t take my place on this stage to raise tribute to him. I am so blessed to have the honor to be a part of presenting him with the aptly awarded lifetime achievement award.
I was so anxious to find the right words to honor a man that teaches me what friendship, and love, and impact, and honor mean everyday, so I thought that I’d instead share part of someone else’s words…part of Boyd’s favorite broadway song and one that captures how most of us that know him feel. But while I do this, I want to honor Boyd by a physical expression of how he brings us all together and lifts us all up, so I want Boyd to join me up here and I want everyone to stand and take the next minute to walk around and high five and bear hug at least 5 or 10 or 15 new friends.
I’ve heard it said that people come into your life for a reason
Bringing something we must learn and we are led to those who help us most to grow…if we let them and we help them in return
Well I don’t know if I believe thats true but I know I’m who I am today because I knew you.
Like a comet pulled from orbit as it passes the sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder halfway thru the wood.
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better
But because I knew you, I have been Changed for good.
It well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me is made of what I’ve learned from you.
You’ll be with me like a handprint on my heart
And now whatever way our stories end
I know you have rewritten ours by being our friend
Like a ship blown from its moorings by a wind off the sea
Like a seed dropped by a sky bird in a distant wood
Who can say if Ive been changed for the better…but
Because I knew you
Because we knew you, Boyd Jones, we have been changed for Good.
please join me honoring Apca’s lifetime achievement honoree, Boyd Jones.
I wish you all could have been there seeing a room full of 1500 people all smiling and high fiving and hugging around the room during the song. At the end of the song, when Eric presented the trophy, the ovation and the applause wouldn’t stop for a good 3 or 4 minutes. It was epic and totally Boyd! Thanks my dear friend for letting me be a part of your moment and a part of your life.
